Salvia Plant Profile and Growing Hints |
Salvia Plants are a perennial that have a low water requirement, flowering summer through to autumn love the sun and attract birds, and are readily available for sale from online mail order nurseries in Australia, so why wouldn't you want some in your garden?
These plants are a member of the mint family, and commonly called sage, huge range of foliage types and flower colours. They are a tough evergreen plant that can be cut back to maintain shape.
Some species are regarded as frost tolerant and some are not. If you are looking for frost tolerant species try, Salvia buchananii, leucantha and villosa, all hardy evergreen salvias.
Some varieties are not evergreen, such as Salvia verticillata, azura and patens.
Salvias plants suitable for tropical and subtropical climates include: Salvia concolor, discolor, iodantha, patens, sessia and wagneriana.

- Sage, (Salvia offifinalis) probably the most widely used salvia for cooking, used in roasts, Tuscan and Italian cooking. Sage butter sauce is popular.

- Salvia fruticosa, used for sage tea.
- Chia (Salvia hispanica) seeds are used in baking, Chia sprouts are used in salads in a similar way to other sprouts
