Garlic Bulbs : Garlic Plant Profile and Growing Notes
|
Garlic is from the allium family and has been used for culinery and medicinal purposes for centuries. Allium sativum is the garlic used in cooking, but with over 200 varieties thew choice is great, different intensities and flavours exist accross the species. Generally speaking plant garlic in winter and harvest during summer after the bottom half of the plant starts to die back.
Garlic Varieties
Garlic comes as 'softneck garlic', 'hardneck garlic' and 'elephant garlic'. Softneck Garlics include: 'silverskin', 'turban', 'chinese pink', 'transylvanian'and 'creole'. Hardneck Garlics: include 'purple stripe', 'porcelain' , 'italian purple' and 'russian red'. Elephant Garlics are large and can be roasted whole. So Hardnecks have the most flavour, Softnecks are easy to grow and last longer once harvested and Elephants are big.

GROWING GARLIC is relatively easy in the home garden.
We provide notes on how to grow garlic from cloves and links to suppliers.
Given a warm sunny position garlic is easy to grow. Cloves that have not been treated can be saved and planted in the garden and these can be obtained from online suppliers or from organic suppliers. Remember that garlic plants will grow to be 2/3m and more tall. Growing from seed is slow and rarely advisable.
Garlic is best planted in Autumn
.
Try an established garden bed that had manure and compost added the previous year.
Dig in a little lime 4 weeks before planting.
Try a well cultivated soil to allow the garlic plant roots to go deep, a sunny position.
Plant garlic cloves 10 cm deep, 15 - 20cm apart.
Mulch around the stems to keep the soil moist.
Water garlic plants in drier months up until December or when the first leaves start to change color. Harvest when the bottom half of the leaves turn brown, but the top half are still green.
The colder the winter the stronger the garlic.
Our favorite... Porcelains, they have large cloves, great flavor and store well for a hardneck garlic.
How and when to Harvest Garlic.
Garlic is best harvested in summer once the leaves have begun to die back. Stop watering as soon as the lower leaves begin to turn brown and then wait a week or two, the top leaves will still be green, but the lower leaves will be brown.
How to store Garlic
A dark cool well ventilated place is best.
