Abutilon - 'Chinese Lanterns'Abutilon or 'Chinese Lantern' trees and species are a popular garden plant available for sale from specialist nurseries. With long lasting flowers Abutilon provide a splash of color in the garden from summer through to autumn. Well known for the bell shaped flowers, however some species and cultivars have funnel shaped flowers.
Cultivation, Pruning and Growing HintsPreferring a mild climate, Abutilon or 'Chinese Lanterns' grow well in a well drained soil in sun or semi shade (avoid heavy frosts). These are an easy plant to care for, mulch well and cut back hard to promote new growth.
Abutilons tend to get a little 'leggy' but can easily be pruned to maintain shape, full sun in winter is a bonus for abutilon. Species and varietiesAbutilon hybrids and cultivars are numerous. Relatives of the hibiscus, with lantern or bell shaped hanging flowers ranging from yellows, orange and tangerine through to pink, red and white.. Abutilon megapotamicum is an interesting ground cover species. Abutilon Vitifolium album has white flowers in spring and summer. Abutilon variegatum is a popular species. Abutilon 'Double Pink' has double pink carnation like flowers summer to autumn. Dwarf Abutilon are suitable for growing in pots.
