Perennial plants are those that normally live 3 or more years. Some perennials are herbaceous and some are woody. Many of the herbaceous perennials will die right back to the ground in winter to reshoot in spring. Perennial plants are used widely in garden border plantings where flowering perennials are a feature during spring and summer.

Perennial plants vary in the conditions that they prefer. Some perennials require full sun and are reasonably drought tolerant. Other perennials prefer shade, some thrive in dry shade while other prefer moist shade.
